چکیده

In theory, plants could induce resistance to herbivores after being directly grazed or after sensing cues from the grazing of neighboring plants (i.e., the ‘‘talking trees’’ effect). Despite an extensive literature on induced defenses in plants, the relative importance of direct attack versus cues from neighbors in mediating induction is not well understood; this is especially true for seaweeds, where few investigations of induction due to attacks on neighbors have been conducted. We measured changes in resistance to grazing for stipes and blades of the brown seaweed Sargassum filipendula (Phaeophyta; Fucales) when it was directly grazed by amphipods or when it received potential waterborne cues from the grazing of neighboring plants, relative to plants that experienced neither direct grazing nor cues from grazed neighbors. After 25 days of these treatments in outdoor tanks, the amphipod Ampithoe longimana consumed top stipes from control plants 2.8 times more rapidly than top stipes from directly grazed plants, but did not differentiate between top blades in the same comparison. The amphipod did not discriminate between plants with grazed neighbors and plants with control neighbors when feeding on either stipes or blades. Thus, induction of resistance in S. filipendula was tissue-specific and occurred as a result of direct grazing, but not due to the grazing of neighboring plants. D 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Comparing the Relative Importance of Water-Borne Cues and Direct Grazing for the Induction of Defenses in the Brown Seaweed Fucus vesiculosus

Some seaweed species have been shown to release water-borne cues after herbivore attack, for example, to attract natural enemies of the herbivore. These cues may also be sensed by neighboring seaweeds and used to adjust their defenses in anticipation of a possible herbivore attack. Several studies indicated information transfer between seaweed individuals in the past, including the brown seawee...

Copper Contamination Impairs Herbivore Initiation of Seaweed Inducible Defenses and Decreases Their Effectiveness

Seaweed-herbivore interactions are often mediated by environmental conditions, yet the roles of emerging anthropogenic stressors on these interactions are poorly understood. For example, chemical contaminants have unknown consequences on seaweed inducible resistance and herbivore response to these defenses despite known deleterious effects of contaminants on animal inducible defenses. Here, we ...

Induced resistance to periwinkle grazing in the brown seaweed Fucus vesiculosus (Phaeophyceae): molecular insights and seaweed-mediated effects on herbivore interactions.

Herbivory is a key factor for controlling seaweed biomass and community structure. To cope with grazers, constitutive and inducible defenses have evolved in macroalgae. Inducible chemical defenses show grazer-specificity and, at the same time, have the potential to mediate interactions among different herbivores. Furthermore, temporal variations in defense patterns, which may adjust antiherbivo...

Asymmetric competition via induced resistance: specialist herbivores indirectly suppress generalist preference and populations.

Species may compete indirectly by altering the traits of a shared resource. For example, herbivore-induced responses in plants may make plants more resistant or susceptible to additional herbivorous insect species. Herbivore-induced plant responses can significantly affect interspecific competition and herbivore population dynamics. These herbivore-herbivore indirect interactions have been over...

Water-Borne Cues of a Non-Indigenous Seaweed Mediate Grazer-Deterrent Responses in Native Seaweeds, but Not Vice Versa

Plants optimise their resistance to herbivores by regulating deterrent responses on demand. Induction of anti-herbivory defences can occur directly in grazed plants or from emission of risk cues to the environment, which modifies interactions of adjacent plants with, for instance, their consumers. This study confirmed the induction of anti-herbivory responses by water-borne risk cues between ad...
